A fantastic celebration: MEMSfest 2026

MEMSfest was held on the 19–20 June at Wolff College, University of Kent. The organisers Emily and Vincent and the post-graduate team of helpers indulged attendees with two-days of seminars, talks and events by the MEMS postgraduates in considering how and why narratives were crafted, shared, and preserved throughout the medieval and early modern worlds. The enduring success of the student-run MEMS Fest is deeply rooted in its community. Below the attendees praise the festival for its welcoming atmosphere, interdisciplinary dialogue, and hands-on workshops that brought medieval and early modern history to life …

In addition hugely popular keynote sessions were provided by  Dr Alexandra Makin and Dr Daisy Black and Special Collections showcased the exhibition produced for the Canterbury Medieval Weekend with talks from three of the MEMS postgraduates involved in the exhibition’s creation: Angela, Tris and Elijah. This attracted a wider audience beyond the MEMS community which included the new Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Canterbury.

In between all the hard work was a trip to St Midred’s Church for a wine reception and an MA roundtable.  Thanks to Clare Wright and Suzanna Ivanic, head of MEMS for all their support with this year’s festival.
